Deontay Wilder -vs- Artur Szpilka, Glazcov -vs- Martin, Haye -vs- De Mori
I can't believe how raw Wilder looks. I don't believe the trio of Molina, Duhaupas and Szpilka would have given Kilt, Fury, Ortiz, Povetkin, or Joshua any problems. Maybe Szpilka could have troubled Parker, but while Wilder has great power, he looks uncordinated and loses his balance too easily.
Exciting fights ahead, regardless

Yeah, but it doesn't cost him. His face does tend to puff up nicely though.

Wilder KOs Szpilka; Martin stops Glazkov

Jeff Sorby - January 16, 2016 - 11 comments

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) unleashed a monstrous right hand in the 9th round to knock his opponent Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) completely out on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Wilder’s right hand ended the show in the 9th round in what was a very closely contested match. The fight was stopped at 2:24 of round nine.

Szpilka, 26, never knew what hit him when he was tagged by Wilder’s right hand in the 9th. The punch sent Szpilka down on his back on the canvas. He didn’t stir for several moments after the KO. The ringside medical staff then checked on Szpilka and quickly took him out of the ring on a stretcher.

Wilder was ahead at the time of the stoppage by the scores of 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75.

The co-feature bout saw undefeated Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) defeat No.1 IBF Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov (21-1-1, 13 KOs) by a 3rd round stoppage to win the IBF heavyweight title. The fight was stopped because of Glazkov injuring his right knee. The referee gave Glazkov a chance to continue fighting after he hurt his knee, but he shook his head and told him that he couldn’t continue.

Neither fighter was dominating and it was still a match that was up for grabs at the time Glazkov injured his right knee. He slipped on the canvas twice in the 3rd. The referee counted the second slip as a knockdown, but no actual punch landed. Glazkov’s knee gave out from under him causing him to hit the canvas. There were reports that Glazkov injured his right ACL in the round. The fight was stopped at 1:50 of the round.

Other boxing action on tonight’s card at the Barclays Center:

Ivan Golub TKO 1 Juan Rodriguez Jr
Maciej Sulecki TKO 7 Derrick Findley
Julian Sosa TKO 2 Bryan Timmons
Carlos Gongora TKO 4 Derrick Adkins
Botirsher Obidov UD 4 Ramil Gadzhiev

Another way to look at it is that Wilders handlers have managed to match him up perfectly giving him more time to hone his skills since he started boxing as an amateur late....  Which is another way of saying they've managed to duck any serious competition, but hey, you can't argue with the results and how they're positioned now.

Exactly Yanni. You reckon Stu is Wilder's matchmaker???

Good point Yanni, his handlers will be well aware of his short comings.

Couldnt agree with you more Naki, Wilder looked extremely raw. Was just relying on raw KO power never got the jab going effectively and was jumpy. Cant see how the score cards had him up 78-74.

Was really impressed with Szpilkas tactics in this fight, great movement, kept low, got inside with the double jab. But just started to get predictable with his head movement i think, and by round 5 there was a sense that Wilder would find an opening eventually.

Still Wilder is far from a finished product, doesnt fight compact enough for my liking. every time Szpilka came in with the dbl jab, he would square Wilder up, leaving him open for the left. Also had him jumping off balance to defend the body punch and caught him a few times going immediately upstairs. Wilder was ineffective in keeping the range and preventing Szpilka getting in, which confirmed some comments by others that he wouldnt handle an aggressive boxer who took the fight to him. Still hes got some real power alright, but very very susceptible to jumping into some big punches in return. All bias aside, i think Wilder would be a perfect opponent for Joes speed and combos, but agree with Naki that Szpilka would be a more dangerous prospect.

Was really enjoying that fight and wish it went a bit longer, still 9 rounds i suppose is decent given the other fights today Smile

I see Wilder as being the most dangerous opponent for Joe in the division. Parker also has his defensive weaknesses. I worry that, like Szpilka, Parker comes in throwing punches and gets nailed. I don't worry about that with Fury, who has limited power.

Wilder had trouble with Szpilka being a southpaw, and felt that he should have taken more chances earlier, and exchanged when Wilder backed into the ropes. He'd finally overcome Wilder's size and reach to hit him, then backed off. He needed to keep smothering him. Risky? Yeah, but the judges were always gonna give the UD to Wilder if it went the distance. Press for the KO.

Is time up on Wilders voluntary defenses?

Barclays Center Post Fight Highlights
By Matt Richardson

Deontay Wilder: I knew I was winning. I knew it was pretty close but that didn’t bother me. My right hand is a monster. Sometimes I get scared of it myself.

Wilder on Povetkin: I’m looking forward to getting him out of his zone and coming to America. It’s too cold in Russia.

Promoter Lou DiBella: Povetkin is the mandatory. We’ve had discussions with their people and we’ll continue to have discussions with their people.

Charles Martin: It’s still soaking in. A lot of hard work. It was a long camp, 11 weeks. I had bad intentions on everything I was throwing. I’m a patient fighter and I knew we had 12 rounds to go and I was going to catch up to him eventually.

Derek Chisora was in attendance and challenged Martin to a fight. Martin said he would consider it. Both guys were respectful of one another.

Glazkov wasn’t able to attend due to his injury and Szpilka was sent to the hospital as a precautionary measure but he was speaking while on the stretcher and appears to be OK.

Hah!  You'll drive Stu crazy with comments like that. I personally like the path they're taking at the moment with Jo, more with the likes of pettaway, saglam, tupou and Meehan. I'd love to see Jo fight Ustinov or wach, or someone else that fulfils some sort of learning curve for Joseph -ie a tall or young or southpaw opponent.
