Pro Fights in other Divisions

Certainly hope we get to see this one live because it has all the makings of a great fight. Linares is a very good boxer but Lomachenko has a habit of making even top fighters look ordinary.

Also looking forward to Badou Jack taking on Adonis Stevenson for the WBC light heavyweight title on May 19.

Lomachenko survived 6th round knockdown to stop Linares in the 10th. Didn't see live but well worth watching the replay!

Interesting to see what Frank Warren does with him here whether he throws him in with Frampton or milks a few defences with Warrington. No doubt Frank will be happy with this result as he now has another cash cow with his following in Leeds.

Boxer Sam Rapira retires from ring after coach throws towel in during title fight

Sam "The Terror" Rapira has called time on his boxing career for the second time in 12 months after a stinging defeat on Saturday.

Last month, Rapira announced his return to the ring, after hanging up his gloves in May 2017, to take on Christchurch's Ratu Dawai for the New Zealand Professional Boxing Commission (NZPBC) National Light Heavyweight title.

But Rapira's coach Lolo Heimuli literally threw the towel in during the eighth round of Saturday night's match-up due to concerns for his boxer's safety. Dawai was announced the winner by technical knock out.

On Sunday Rapira announced his retirement from the sport for good, but said he had no regrets about getting back into the ring after a 12 month hiatus.

"I'm proud of my career. I don't regret this and I'll never wonder what if," he said.

While disappointedto be ending his career on a losing note, Rapira said it was his body which ultimately let him down.

"I was not the same fighter I was before."

"My corner did the right thing throwing in the towel as I wasn't going to turn it around," he said.

In the weekend's other title fight Tarn "The Terminator" Reid was defeated by Northland's Quinita Hati via unanimous decision after the pair's NZPBC national title.

The fight, which went the full eight rounds, was the first ever female title bout held in the region.

Taranaki Explosion fight night organiser Ashley Smith said crowd support for the sporting spectacle had been "magnificent".

A big turn-out, close to a sell-out, packed into the TSB Stadium in New Plymouth to watch the nine fights on the card.

Along with two title fights featuring Rapira and Reid, there were seven corporate bouts involving a mix of male and female fighters.

"There some incredible match-ups," Smith said.

He said future fight nights were a possibility given the appetite people in the region appeared to have for the sport.

Full results:
Ratu Dawai beat Sam Rapira via TKO

Chris Luke beat Jimo Rangi via unanimous decision
Mel Koch beat Catherine Preston via unanimous decision
Wayne Capper beat Kris Robinson via TKO
