Arreola crushes Augustin in three

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In his second fight after a 2-year hiatus, former heavyweight contender Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (38-5-1, 33 KOs) put on a show at AT&T Stadium in the first pay-per-view bout under the Spence-Garcia mega fight. Arreola came out firing against Jean Pierre Augustin (17-7-1, 12 KOs) in the first round, backing up the southpaw. Augustin countered the active Arreola landing counter straight left hands that bloodied the nose of Arreola. The 2nd round was much of the same as Arreola was on the attack as both guys were warned by referee Neal Young for roughhousing.

But in round 3 it was all Arreola as he buckled Augustin legs with a straight left hand to open the round. Augustin stood on his feet temporarily, but Arreola smelled blood and went in for the kill dropping Augustin who barely got to his feet. Arreola attacked Augustin and put him against the ropes and dropped a flurry of bombs that caused referee Neal Young to jump in and stop the fight. The time of stoppage was 2:30 of the 3rd round for the TKO victory for Arreola.

Arreola has been in a great mood all week after being out of the ring for two years before his comeback fight on Wilder-Fury card in Los Angeles. Coming into the fight Arreola shared his thoughts with Fightnews.com.

“I love fighting. I love it. The comradery you get like right now, talking to other fighters, talking to media, to other coaches, the comradery is just so dope man. Yea we may look like animals when we are in the ring, but outside we are just regular people of life. I think we have a little more respect for life, because our life is so precious. We can lose it just that quick in the ring.”

“I took 2 years off. I spent a lot of time with my family, my son, my daughter and I got tired of it. It was time for me to get to work. Honestly, I got tired of it. I miss boxing. I miss getting punched. I’m happy to be here.”

Trainer Henry Ramirez had this to say during fight week.

“He sees the rebirth of the heavyweight division and there’s a lot of good fights that could be made out there.”

“Chris puts his mind and really dedicates himself, he could do things he may not have thought he really could. When he is prepared and focused he’s a dangerous guy.”

With this performance, Arreola showed he was, indeed, dangerous, and may have just put the heavyweight division on notice as he was sharp, in great shape and rejuvenated. If nothing else, he undoubtedly landed himself a big payday in the now stacked heavyweight division.

Martin beats Corbin by DQ

By Miguel Maravilla at ringside

Former heavyweight world champion Charles Martin (26-2-1, 23 KOs) won by eighth round disqualification against Gregory Corbin (15-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The bout was terminated due to low blows from Corbin.

Off to a slow start in the opening round Martin and Corbin felt each other out throwing the jab but Martin finished the round strong hitting Corbin with a right hand at the bell. Martin backed Corbin up a pair of times in the second connecting with a solid straight lefts. In round four, Corbin landed an uppercut snapping Martin’s head shortly after the referee deducted a point from Corbin for a low blow. Martin was cut on the left eye and continued to exchange. The southpaw Martin kept his distance in the fifth popping the jab as Corbin stalked his way in. Things kept getting difficult for Corbin as he landed a low blow, the referee once again deducted a point from Corbin late in the round.

Corbin was not helping his cause as he landed another low blow in the sixth, the referee deducted a point from Corbin for a third time as the local fighter was flirting with disqualification. The former world champion pressed in the seventh round as Corbin appeared to be getting frustrated already behind on the scorecards. The referee had finally seen enough as he disqualified Corbin for landing numerous low blows stopping the fight at 53 seconds of the eighth.

At least Schwartz is fighting a live body. Unbelievable that he can go this far to fight an elite fighter just because he has an undefeated record. Here are his opponents. Somebody find his best opponent, and you win a dollar courtesy of Sham:

IBF #1 heavyweight Pulev cut, KOs Dinu in seven

By Miquel Maravilla at ringside

The heavyweights were in action as IBF #1 contender Kubrat Pulev (27-1, 14 KOs) of Bulgaria scored a dramatic seventh round KO over WBA #14 Bogdan Dinu (18-2, 14 KOs) of Romania on Saturday night in the ESPN main event at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California.
Pulevkodinu

It was a slow start for the big guys but Pulev backed Dinu with a one-two in the final seconds of the opening round. Working behind the jab in round two, Pulev backed Dinu as he controlled the round. Pulev began to throw and land the overhand right in round three as he continued to back Dinu. The Romanian let his hands go in round four and he landed a solid right hand cutting Pulev badly over the left eye.
The blood flowed from Pulev’s left eye in the fifth as Dinu kept his distance boxing. It appeared that the cut was contained to begin the sixth as Pulev came out more confident landing the right hand and backing Dinu but the cut was opened again late in the round. The Bulgarian came out firing in the seventh as he landed the one-two sending Dinu to the canvas. However, Pulev was deducted one point as he hit Dinu while going down to a knee. After a delay, Dinu continued to fight and was battered down a second time from a Pulev right. Another Pulev right hand did it as Dinu was floored a third time and done. Referee Raul Caiz stopped the fight at 2:40 of the seventh round.

With the win, Pulev remains at the top of the IBF list to face WBA/IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Hard to recognize a name on that list (apart from Croatian cab driver Ivica Bacurin) but Senad Gashi was giving him all sorts of problems when they fought until he got DQ'd for headbutting. Gashi then went on to get KO'd by Takam and is now being lined up for Chisora to knockover.
