Canelo dethrones Smith with ninth round KO

Returning to the 154lb division, former middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) scored a ninth round KO over WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-1-1, 13 KOs) in front of an estimated 51,240 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Canelo took command in round one against the slower Smith. In round two, Canelo landed hard shots to the body, while Smith started to connnect late. Canelo was cut over left eye. Canelo edged rounds three and four. Smith cut over right eye but had some moments in round five. Blood flowing heavily from Smith in round six. Canelo dropped Smith with a right to the ear in round seven, but Smith dealt with Alvarez’ follow up attack. Smith down from a body shot in round eight. The finish came with another body shot in round nine.

Just saw the Smith vs Alvarez fight on SKY last nite. Canelo just too big and classy for Smith. Almost a mis-match. Did Alvarez come up in weight to fight him from welterweight. Weirdly, he was the bigger man framewise.

Alvarez came down from middleweight (he vacated rather than fight GGG). He fought Khan, a welterweight last.
