RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 01-04-2023 Joseph Parker aims to start year 'with a bang' Stuff sports reporters 10:32, Jan 04 2023 Joseph Parker is eager to bounce back from his knockout loss to Joe Joyce and tips a rough time for cruiserweight Jack Massey in Manchester. Joseph Parker has vowed to “start the year off with a bang” and intends to give Jack Massey “a rude awakening” to the heavyweight boxing ranks. Massey is stepping up from cruiserweight to take on former WBO heavyweight champion Parker in Manchester on January 22 (NZT). Parker is looking to rebound from the first knockout loss of his career at the hands of Joe Joyce last September, and intends to put in a statement performance to get him back in the mix at the top of the glamour division. "Jack's got my full attention now, and he's going to get it," Parker told Sky Sports. "He can come up to heavyweight, but it's going to be a rude awakening. If he's taking anything from my last fight then that's a mistake. I'll show something better.” Parker, now 30-3, makes no excuses for his loss to Joyce and again voiced an appetite for a rematch with the giant Brit. He has also got two other losses in Britain to Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua he would like to avenge. "[Joyce] was the better man on the day and on that day I gave it everything I had, and it wasn't good enough. If I could line up a few fights or a few good wins I'd love to have a rematch with him,” Parker told Sky Sports. "I would love to fight Dillian Whyte again, I think that first fight was very exciting and again on that day, he was the winner, and he got the better of me. There wasn't a lot in it. "If I can get a good win over Jack, that could be next.” Dillian Whyte and Joseph Parker went toe-to-toe in a London thriller in 2018. Attempts to pin down Joshua haven’t come to anything yet, but Parker would like another fight with the man who took his WBO belt off him. "David Higgins, my manager sent a message to Matchroom [to ask] if Joshua needed a fight, but we got no reply back," Parker said. "He's got to fight someone. I know he's looking for a trainer or working with a few trainers in America but if AJ wants a fight, let me finish Jack off, if you're looking for a fight, come to me. Dillian Whyte, if you're looking for a fight, I'm available, after I take care of Jack. “Even Joe Joyce, if you want another fight and no one wants to fight you, let's go again. I don't really care. I have no worries about fighting anyone." Parker realises he must impress against Massey, a 29-year-old who has fashioned a 20-1 record as a cruiserweight and is the IBO champion in that division. Joseph Parker needs a good fight to resurrect his career after sufferance his first knockout loss at the hands of Joe Joyce. "I know where I am now and I have to build myself back and the person in front of me now is Jack and Jack's been asking for this fight and he's going to get it," Parker told Sky Sports. "I have left my family for Christmas and New Year, been training up in Morecambe … I'm going to make it worth it by beating him up, smash him as best I can. "From a loss like that you need to come back and show a better account of yourself and that's what I want to do. “The explosive finish is what we all want. He may be a little bit difficult to pin down, and I've been studying him and he's a tough, tough guy. But I don't think he's at my level. "Maybe he saw something the last fight that he could work on to try and get me. But my goal is to go out there and just smash him and start the year off with a bang." Thanx for the link! RE: Joseph Parker - bart - 01-05-2023 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TFZ6p68cUw RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 01-05-2023 (01-05-2023, 08:13 PM)bart Wrote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TFZ6p68cUw Parker beats Whyte now. It's amazing how much JP has recovered after the JJ beat down. It's also great that he's willing to fight anybody. And fight often. RE: Joseph Parker - bart - 01-06-2023 He is sounding good He just needs to transfer that to the ring and look good. I agree with Gman the issue with the Andy Lee formula is the weight, it works for Tyson who would not have been able to sustain his old pitter patter style into his later years especially v Wilder, but JP needs to move as he isn't a KO artist. Interesting they seem to blame the weight on illness late in the camp, Lee mentions JP and Bakole coming down with something hopefully we see JP fit and fast late 230's -early 240's RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 01-06-2023 I blame the JJ fight on Andy Lee. Bad fight plan, bad weight gain. If JP was ill, carrying more weight would only hurt him. I really like Joe's attitude about fighting. RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 01-12-2023 I have to look good' - Parker on his comeback after brutal defeat By Patrick McKendry, Digital Sport Reporter Joseph Parker had a difficult night last September against Joe Joyce in his first stoppage defeat. In just over a week, Joseph Parker will fight for the first time since his defeat at the hands of Joe Joyce, a brutal first stoppage loss. Kiwi Parker’s opponent for the heavyweight clash at the Manchester Arena on Sunday, January 21 (NZT) is Englishman Jack Massey. Massey, 29, is moving up a division from cruiserweight and represents a somewhat curious choice for Parker given his modest record and profile. Still, Parker is taking no chances. In an interview with 1News, Parker has revealed that after suffering from illness before the Joyce fight – which he believes robbed him of energy at the very least – his current routine is limited to training, sleeping and eating at his Morecambe base. “I’m not going out much,” he says. “I’m not going out [due to] the possibility of getting germs and getting sick. There’s a touch of what [former trainer] Kevin [Barry] used to do; hand sanitizer and gloves and knuckles instead of shaking hands - just being careful and enjoying camp." If Parker, now 30-3, looks good in beating Massey then bigger fights will open up. Parker wants to fight three more times this year and one of his next opponents may be American Michael Hunter, a former cruiserweight. In September, Parker, down several times against Joyce and with a cut over his right eye, fought with character and may have won the first round but appeared tired from then on – not to mention outgunned against a remarkably resilient opponent. The manner of his defeat and sportsmanship afterwards helped burnish his reputation – particularly in the United Kingdom – but he confirmed suggestions he wasn’t feeling well leading into it. “We had the best camp and I’m not making any excuses but two weeks before the fight I got sick,” Parker says. “Usually I can go 12 rounds easy and not be gassed, but after one round I was gassed. On the day of the fight I gave it my best effort and it wasn’t good enough. Joyce was the better man on the day. “I took some good shots and credit to Joyce he’s one hell of a fighter – very tough – and he took a lot of shots himself but gave a lot back. I know I looked bruised up and quite injured after the fight but I healed well. I’m lucky on that side of things. “I had a good time with the family and while I was healing I travelled around enjoying Fiji, Samoa, time in New Zealand. I was training back home and keeping in shape but there was no real purpose behind it so my wife said ‘hey, you need to get back fighting again’.” The bruising defeat to Joyce prompted suggestions in some areas for Parker to retire but the Kiwi is carving out a popular following in the UK. Jack Massey is a cruiserweight who has never fought at heavyweight as a professional. It would be fair to say he’s in rebuild mode now – hence a scheduled 10-round fight against a man who has never competed outside of Great Britain – but he’s lost none of his drive. Asked about Massey, Parker said: “We were looking at the likes of Dave Allen and Robert Helenius, but [promoter] Boxxer and Sky wanted to make this fight happen because Jack Massey was begging for a big fight, he wanted to fight in front of his home crowd but also I was struggling to lock in a fight.” Parker added when asked whether he would be disappointed if he doesn’t stop Massey: “You want to stop every opponent and look good doing it. I’ve had great training and sparring. I’m not going to put any pressure on myself to look sensational and get him out of there. I’m just going to enjoy it. I know what I can do. “I’m expected to go in there and smash him because he’s not a heavyweight. I’m not comparing him to [Oleksandr] Usyk or [Evander] Holyfield, cruiserweights who came up to heavyweight, or saying he’s anything like them, but cruiserweights can come up and… interrupt the division. I’m not taking it lightly.” Parker’s camp has prevented him from sharing Christmas and his recent birthday with his young family (he turned 31 on Monday). It is a sacrifice that will only be worthwhile if he wins well. “It would be nice to get a good win over Jack Massey, and Michael Hunter has been calling out my name. Maybe I could fight him in March or April. Maybe three fights and I could be back in the top six or top five but I have to look good. There’s no point fighting and winning on points and being boring. “I’m 31, I’ve been in this game for more than 10 years now. I feel like a veteran. It’s a tough game but I feel like I have more to give.” RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 01-12-2023 oseph Parker's next fight to be shown on free-to-air TV in New Zealand Stuff sports reporters Joseph Parker is aiming to return to winning ways after losing his last fight to Joe Joyce in September. Heavyweight boxing fans in New Zealand are in for a treat with Joseph Parker’s next fight to be shown on free-to-air television. The former WBO heavyweight world champion returns to the ring in Manchester on January 22 (NZT) against the unheralded Jack Massey, a career cruiserweight moving up in weight. And the bout will be broadcast live on Three – the first time Parker has appeared on terrestrial television since he turned professional over a decade ago. Parker (30-3, 21 KOs) is looking to get his career back on track after suffering only his third loss – and first by knockout – to England’s Joe Joyce in a thrilling slugfest in September. He is a heavy favourite against ‘One Smack’ Massey (20-1, 11 KOs), who holds the lightly-regarded IBO cruiserweight belt but has never faced anyone close to Parker’s calibre. Parker has vowed to deliver an explosive performance on the undercard of an action-packed show headlined by an all-British grudge match between middleweights Chris Eubank Jr (32-2, 23 KOs) and Liam Smith (32-3-1, 19 KOs) as he looks to get himself back in mix at heavyweight. “Good on Jack for stepping up to take this fight,” Parker said. “He’s a tough guy who is very skilful and he clearly backs himself. “But unfortunately for him he has made a huge mistake. I’ve got a point to prove and he is standing in my way.” Parker’s manager David Higgins said the move to free-to-air was a great chance for Kiwi fans to see the country’s most successful boxer while he was still in his prime. “Because he has achieved so much it is easy to forget that Joseph is still just 31,” Higgins said of Parker, who won the vacant WBO title against Andy Ruiz Jr in 2016 before losing it to Anthony Joshua two years later. “But for a heavyweight that means his best years are still ahead of him. This is an important fight for Joseph against a tough opponent as he looks to get the ball rolling for a huge year in 2023.” While Parker will enter the ring as the much bigger man and having faced the very best of the heavyweight division, his once-beaten opponent was confident of pulling off an upset and handing the New Zealander a second successive loss. “I do not turn down any challenges and to have a fight like this in Manchester is a dream come true,” local lad Massey told British boxing channel BBTV Boxing. Jack Massey has only lost once in his 21 outings but will be fighting at heavyweight for the first time. “A lot of cruiserweights are shying away from fighting me. We got the offer and you’ve got to take these things with both hands. It’s what I do. I’m a boxer. I’ve been boxing since the age of 11. I never shy away from a fight – ever. “I’m not turning up for a payday, I’m turning up to make a massive, massive upset. “Don’t sleep on me. People haven’t seen the best of me.” Three’s coverage of the event gets under way at 7am on Sunday, January 22. AT A GLANCE What: Joseph Parker v Jack Massey Where: Manchester Arena, When: Sunday, January 22 (NZT). Live on Three from 7am. RE: Joseph Parker - bart - 01-12-2023 good stuff at last |
