RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-04-2020 I figure if Hearns is guiding Parker's career, the third fight will be big against a fighter in his stable. But I agree, it should have been Wach. Spend the money, and do a low PPV. Right now, no one in their right mind will pay PPV for Parker/Winters. Joes next opponent will have to be very good for his career otherwise he needs to look for another promoter. RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-05-2020 Eddie has some incentive in matching Parker with someone in his stable for the 3rd and final fight under Hearn. It should be a relatively easy fight to make. I'm sure he wants to keep Parker around for another contract too. RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-05-2020 https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/combat-sports/119293553/joseph-parker-sparring-carlos-takam-in-texas-preparations RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-05-2020 Why Joseph Parker struggles to find opponents Duncan Johnstone Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker looks slick in training as he prepares for a big year. Trainer Kevin Barry has explained the difficulties in getting Joseph Parker top-line opponents as little known American Shawndell Winters was confirmed for this month's fight in Texas. Parker, No 2 with the WBO and hovering around the title calculations, is considered too dangerous without a major monetary reward for most fighters. Barry, after a training session in Las Vegas on Wednesday that involved Parker sparring with an old foe in Carlos Takam, revealed several big names that were fruitlessly chased for the February 29 bout in Frisco on the outskirts of Dallas. "Before Joe even came back into camp we almost had Robert Helenius, the WBA No 6, signed," Barry told Stuff. He said they'd also reached out to respected American Gerald Washington and world ranked Germans Christian Hammer and Erken Teper to no avail. "It looked like we were going to get Mariusz Wach but he ruled himself out." Barry suggested the economics of the current environment were making it hard for the matchmakers and promoters to tie down preferred fights. "A lot of people look at the boxing business at the moment, especially with the streaming," Barry explained. "There are a lot of opportunities opening up and I personally believe that a lot of these guys don't want to put themselves in a fight against a dangerous opponent like Joe unless it is for a lot of money. "That has always been a bit of a problem in boxing. A lot of guys protect their image." On reflection, and given the limited fights Parker has had over the last 12 months, Barry feels Winters could be the "perfect opponent" to launch what he hopes will be a productive 2020. "Shawndell is the North American heavyweight champion, he's No 14 with the WBA. He is on a bit of a tear at the moment, having pulled off a couple of good wins. "For me that makes him a dangerous opponent, the guy has got nothing to lose." The 39-year-old Winters has a 13-2 record with 12 knockout wins. But that is light compared to Parker's 26-2 record against superior opponents and the Kiwi will be expected to win well. Barry says that is crucial. "I've been telling Joe ever since he got back into camp it doesn't matter who we fight, the most important thing is you have to look good. "The heavyweight division at the moment is on fire and Joe needs to be hot in this performance to solidify himself as one of the elite heavyweights in the world today. "If we are going to get these big fights, we have to look good. The fights we need to dominate, we have to dominate and look good." RE: Joseph Parker - bart - 02-05-2020 I think EH will pit JP v Hunter If Hunter wins he has a W v JP and a draw v Povetkin so he then becomes promote-able as a title challenger If JP win ditto win win EH I only say that as I believe the Usyk WBO title fight has sailed. If JP loses but in a good performance he will be feed to Hyovic to build his resume. The only way JP halts becoming a young gatekeeper/journeyman is to win No pressure mate just win and win well RE: Joseph Parker - justafan - 02-05-2020 (02-05-2020, 05:36 PM)diehard Wrote: Why Joseph Parker struggles to find opponentsSorry to be a downer but man there is some bullshit in there RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-06-2020 Joseph Parker opponent named By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing WBO #2 Joseph Parker (26-2, 20 KOs) will clash with Shawndell Terrell Winter (13-2, 12 KOs) at the Ford Centre at The Star, Frisco, Texas, on February 29. Parker is coming off a ten round stoppage of Alex Leapai in his only bout for 2019. There was talk of Parker getting a WBO heavyweight title shot at the vacant title if the WBO makes a decision to strip IBF, WBA, WBO champion Anthony Joshua for his decision to defend against the IBF #1 Kubrat Pulev in preference to defending against WBO #1 Oleksandr Usyk. RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-06-2020 Joseph Parker battles Shawndell Winter on Garcia-Vargas card on Feb.29 Matchroom Boxing - February 5, 2020 Joseph Parker will return to action against Shawndell Winters at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday February 29, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK. Parker (26-2 20 KOs) is back on the hunt to regain his World champion status having been forced out of an October clash with Derek Chisora in London after a spider bite on his leg led to an illness that robbed the Kiwi of a fight with the all-action Brit. The former WBO ruler had teed up a mouth-watering clash with ‘Del Boy’ having stopped Alex Leapai in the tenth round of their clash in Providence, RI in June, the first fight of a three-fight deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA. Parker will look to reignite his charge to elite level and World title showdowns in Texas against Winters, the Illinois man ranked #14 with the WBA and looking to extend his KO run having taken the unbeaten record of Canadian-Ukrainian Oleksandr Teslenko to land the NABA title in Ontario, Canada in September and following that with another stoppage win on enemy turf with a fifth round victory over Poland’s Sergeij Werwejko in November. Winters, who has KO’d 12 of his 13 wins, will be looking to continue his winning streak and scupper Parker’s plans to become a two-weight World champion, but Parker plans to make an explosive statement on a stacked card in the Lone Star State. Fighting on Feb.29 gives Parker the chance to showoff “I am delighted to be back in action on this huge bill in Texas,” said Parker. It was frustrating to be ruled out of the Chisora fight in October, especially in such an unusual way, but I have been on fire in the gym in Las Vegas and we’re ready to get back to business. The division is moving at a great pace and this is a perfect opportunity to show the world that I am one of the elite players in the division. “Shawndell is on a great run and I know he’ll bring it on February 29 – but I am ready to show that I will become a two-time World champion in 2020 and that starts with a dominant and destructive display in Frisco.” “This is the biggest fight of my career and I am going to make it count,” said Winters. “I am used to being the underdog, it’s something that I thrive on and if Joseph Parker underestimates me, he’s going to be in for a bad night – because I am going in there to take him out. “I want to thank Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing USA, DiBella Entertainment and Be Def Sports for the opportunity and special thanks to champion Joseph for taking me as a worthy opponent – but he will live to regret it!” Hearn wants Parker to make a statement “It’s great to have Joseph back in action early in the year,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “The Heavyweight division is red-hot right now, and it’s important for Joseph to make a statement and remind the champions and fellow challengers that he’s coming for them – but Shawndell is on a roll and will. be desperate to take a huge scalp in the shape of the Kiwi on a massive night in Texas.” “Shawndell is a very tough competitor who recently moved up to Heavyweight. He’s already pulled off two consecutive upsets against favored opponents, and the fight before that should have been a third,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “He’s looking for his biggest upset yet against former World champion Joseph Parker. This is a tremendous opportunity for this ex-Cruiserweight Rocky from Harvey, Illinois. I believe he is a live underdog.” Parker’s clash with Winters is part of a huge night of action in Texas topped by a mouthwatering Welterweight clash between Mikey Garcia (39-1 30 KOs) and Jessie Vargas (29-2-2 11 KOs). |
