RE: Joseph Parker - justafan - 02-15-2016 From twitter, trying to save face after AJ announcement maybe? Kevin Barry @kevinbarrynzl 1h1 hour ago Big announcement coming soon #TEAMPARKER 1 retweet 1 like Reply Retweet 1 Like 1 More RE: Joseph Parker - james5000 - 02-15-2016 Whats the odds Bergman II or Martz II, billed as grudge matches RE: Joseph Parker - Rusty01 - 02-15-2016 Ike traded with Tua the whole fight, both never gave an inch. Knocked out Byrd. His efforts in the ring definatley deserve respect. If hes half the fighter he was, he upsets many top rated fighters today. I don't see Parker walking all over him if hes stayed in inshape. RE: Joseph Parker - diehard - 02-15-2016 The promoters of New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker turned down an offer to host a title fight against American IBF champion Charles Martin due to the expense involved, but say the door has been left open for a mandatory challenge in the near future. Southpaw Martin will make the first defence of his title against Englishman Anthony Joshua in London on April 9 - a fight likely to be very lucrative for both men, but also very difficult for the incumbent - after Duco Events turned Martin down. "They actually contacted us to see if we would front with millions of dollars for a fight down here and I just suggested it was ludicrous to even think about the sort of money they were asking for," Duco's Dean Lonergan said. "They were looking for something and they got it in Joshua. "The money they were asking for was huge. It's available in England but it's not available here." Duco have fast-tracked 24-year-old Parker during his unbeaten 18-fight professional career, but in this case they are playing a slightly longer game. A victory for either Martin or Joshua will ease the door open wider for a mandatory shot by Parker, who is ranked No6 by the IBF, an organisation which has no official No1 or No2-rated fighters. After champion Martin, the next on the list is No3 Erkan Teper, a Turk who failed a drugs test in December and, should his B sample also test positive, is facing a lengthy ban. Fourth is Joshua, with 35-year-old Cameroonian-Frenchman Carlos Takam fifth, one ahead of Parker. Should Teper drop out due to a drugs ban, Parker could be fighting Takam in an elimination bout for a mandatory shot at the title. Parker's next fight is in Christchurch on April 16 against an opponent Lonergan hoped he would be able to confirm in the next few days. Parker is also slated to fight in July, a bout which his promoters hope will be a warm-up for much bigger things to come. "Right now, what's happening in England is incredibly significant for us," Lonergan said. "With Martin signing to fight Anthony Joshua all sorts of interesting things open up. That's a brilliant fight to be made for British boxing. Britain is a hotbed of heavyweight boxing and it just got a lot hotter." Joshua, a 25-year-old Olympic gold medallist is an extremely powerful puncher and will present the relatively inexperienced Martin with easily the toughest challenge of his career. Joshua, unbeaten in 16 professional fights, will also be on home turf at the O2 Arena, a fight almost guaranteed to be a sellout. The Englishman recently said he had been following Parker's career with interest and believed the two would meet in the ring eventually. IBF standings: Champion: Charles Martin 1. Not rated 2. Not rated 3. Erkan Teper 4. Anthony Joshua 5. Carlos Takam 6. Joseph Parker 7. Vyacheslav Glazkov 8. Steve Cunningham 9. Andy Ruiz 10. Bermane Stiverne RE: Joseph Parker - craigyid14 - 02-15-2016 If this is true then they're crazy not to take it. Parker (as will AJ) would beat Martin. Surely if goal is to get Parker a title shot then what easier way are they going to get it? Especially in NZ? Couldn't the mad butcher and others of helped stump up the money? Crazy if they didn't even give it a shot. RE: Joseph Parker - Infern0 - 02-15-2016 (02-15-2016, 06:18 PM)craigyid14 Wrote: If this is true then they're crazy not to take it. Couldn't the mad butcher and others of helped stump up the money? Crazy if they didn't even give it a shot. I think there i a chance Martin is better than he' given credit for, he's certainly a lot better than anyone Parker or Joshua has fought and we don't know if he's able to go through the gear if he needs to, add in that he' southpaw and awkward, it's a posible bannana skin. if Duco managed to somehow put the money together to outbid hearn, and then all of a udden we find out Martin i the real deal and Joe got beat, Duco would be out of business it's senible to sit this one out imo, there will be better opportunities RE: Joseph Parker - craigyid14 - 02-15-2016 I don't think that there will be a better opportunity. When AJ beats Martin he ain't coming to NZ, they ain't gonna fly Parker over to blighty, Parkers not known. Too many options for Eddie Hearn in England already for mega money. Parker won't get a shot for at least a year now and he'll probably get beat in that time. If anything I actually think Martin is grossly overrated. RE: Joseph Parker - justafan - 02-15-2016 After the Bergman fight I honestly think Martin is too much of a risk, especially if it was going to have a massive impact on Duco's purse strings. Parker still needs time to work on a couple of chinks in his armor. Also, AJ was never coming to NZ and even if Parker held one world title belt it probably wouldn't happen as Matchroom have the ability to make bigger fights on their doorstep. There's no money in coming to NZ for them RE: Joseph Parker - NakiFan - 02-15-2016 Fair call I reckon, Martin seems to want to cash out, or somehow go through to the next stage if he managed to beat JP or AJ. So I'd assume ludicrous money, was actually ludicrous money. Duco would have been hanging themselves out there, even trying to recoup the cash in a weak USA market where Martin would hardly register on the sporting landscape. The vast majority of cash would have had to be generated via PPV in NZ. So, it didn't eventuate. Next step, Parker cements himself in the top 5 of the alphabets. Duco will need to make a decision if they alone can finance the bigger fights, or team up with probably a states-based outfit to fight alongside. Parker gets a chance to further develop against better opponents, and when the mandatory comes, we can only hope he grabs it with both hands. They have connections in the states, so things will definitely kick off this year or next... Straight from Joseph's Facebook page: In the gym with MGM resorts Chairman & CEO Mr. Jim Murren, Kevin Barry and my friend, his son Jack Murren #teamparker -------------------- Now is obviously not his time, but we have to remember, he is 24. RE: Joseph Parker - craigyid14 - 02-15-2016 I just hope they don't look back on this as a massive missed opportunity, remember Tua only got one shot. |
