tua wants back in - Calikiwi - 11-22-2014

so dave now says he'll fight the winner of kali/cameron next year. its tough to stay out of the spotlight. deja vu x 10.

It's really a good move by Tua. He can't beat the elite, but he can make some good coin fighting fighters in his own back yard. But I wouldn't look for Super 8 or Duco to pay for his Jenny Craig bills this time. If Meehan wins, I think the $$$ would be larger, as Cameron vs Tua I was a travesty.

Thanks Cali. Here's the article:

Kiwi David Tua plans to return to boxing ring

LIAM NAPIER

MEAN MACHINE: David Tua fancies another few rounds in the ring it seems.

The winner of tonight's Super8 main event between heavyweights Shane Cameron and Kali Meehan could be pitted against David Tua next year.

Cameron and Meehan square off at the North Shore Events Centre on a card that also sees leading Kiwi cruiserweight David Aloua take on rugged Australian Anthony McCracken in a rematch of their 2012 brawl - won via split decision by Aloua.

Of the eight cruiserweights contesting the Super8 tournament, which features a $154,000 prize pool, Australian Brad Pitt and Samoan Vitalie Soi are the favoured contenders to progress to the final from opposing sides of the draw.

Meehan's son, 19-year-old Sydney Roosters back-rower Willis, also faces a tough test in his pro debut against Will Quarrie. Ultimately, though, Cameron and Meehan will take centre stage. And if they needed any added motivation, Tua may have provided it.

Following his one-sided loss to towering Belarusian Alexander Ustinov 12 months ago, Tua declared his heart was no longer in the sport.

But on his 41st birthday yesterday, Tua revealed he was in talks with Sky Arena to fight the winner of Cameron-Meehan next year.

Tua indicated issues surrounding his personal life contributed to his underwhelming performance against Ustinov and said he was genuine about coming out of retirement.

"It's something I've been thinking about straight after the last fight. There were a lot of things happening in my personal life, so it was hard to put a definite answer on it," Tua said.

"Everything is all clear now and I think it's time to get back into it. Everything I say I speak from the heart; I don't just say things to promote the event.

"Yeah, it's realistic. I'm going to try and sort out a few bits and pieces for next year and then make a definite decision."

If true u would hope he would start to lose some weight like now, coz man he is pretty big at the moment. He looks to be bigger then before he starting losing weight for Ustinov fight. Agree would like to see Tua fight Meehan and then maybe Tua and Rahman

RE: tua wants back in - Calikiwi - 11-22-2014

It would make such a huge difference if Dave just didn't let himself go I between fights. He's in his gym every day. Why can't he just eat clean. Once he gets into the habit of eating good food, the craving for KFC, burgers goes away.

RE: tua wants back in - diehard - 11-22-2014

His fighter, Mad Dog, is fighting tonite in the Super 8.  Tua should be in his corner, so we'll see how big he is.  Truth be told, this is a pattern since the Duva years, when he balloons up to 300 pounds, loses the weight, down to 240 or so, and then fights.  The problem is that he's now 41, his yo-yo weight gain and loss has robbed him of his power, and he hasn't KO'd anyone in five years or so.  Cameron was the last.  Of course, if Cameron beat Meehan and wanted Cameron vs Tua II, he would get KO'd again.

RE: tua wants back in - Calikiwi - 11-24-2014

Meehans comments were spot on concerning a possible fight with Dave. No reason at this point in such a fight.

If by some miracle an arreola fight was scheduled, I'd watch, but in the same context as watching a train wreck. Dave should just stay retired.

RE: tua wants back in - tuaman - 11-29-2014

I think David still would make money in boxing.... Also the titile should be in his hands when Barrett won him illegally taking drugs a years ago...
