Here's the fight where Travis Walker stopped Meehan three years ago. Meehan has a lot of power in his punches, but speed and combos stopped him in this fight.

This would be an interesting fight for Parker. Gerald Washington. 15-0. 13 KO's. Fighting out of California. Six foot six inches. Fights Mansour next week. Parker needs to line up the winner. http://boxrec.com/boxer/621653
'Old dog' Kali Meehan excited by potential of 'young lion' Joseph Parker

Kali Meehan paid a visit to Hamilton Gardens ahead of his fight with Joseph Parker.

When the final bell rings, "old dog" Kali Meehan will go back to being a fan of "young lion" Joseph Parker. Until then, Parker is firmly in the old dog's crosshairs.

The 45-year-old boxing veteran Meehan will take the ring with 23-year-old Parker on Thursday night in Auckland in what should be Parker's biggest challenge to-date.

Meehan has fought three world champions in his time and has seen exciting young boxers come through the ranks before.

Parker is no different, although being an Auckland boy like himself, Meehan admits to being excited by what he's seen from Parker in previous fights.

That won't stop him from wanting to etch the first loss onto Parker's record though.

"You fight every fight to win," Meehan said during a visit to Hamilton.

"You want to beat everybody. That's part of the mentality as a sportsperson, but it is exciting too to watch [Joseph Parker] progress and see his career come along, the same as my son [Willis Meehan].

"I wish nothing but success for him, although I'm trying to beat him, you know. After this, win, lose or draw, I'll be supporting him for his fights.

"He's doing a great job. The boxing viewing public in New Zealand are excited and that's half the battle there."

In some ways, Meehan has always wanted to be in a position to test himself against the best up-and-comer, and this is that chance.

"I didn't plan too fight this long, but I always relished the thought of one day being the old dog fighting the young lion for some weird, crazy reason.

"Now, here that fight comes."

Parker has quickly risen to No 6 in the WBO world boxing rankings, as well as 13th in the WBA and 14th in the WBC.

His speed and power have emerged as two of his obvious gifts in the boxing ring, and are the major concerns for Meehan heading into their fight.

To prepare, Meehan has been sparring with his son, Willis, and others with speed and power in the ring.

With so much experience in his 47 fight career, Meehan believes Parker will be one of the best young fighters he's seen.

"I never look past any fight, and I go into every fight like it's my last, especially at this stage of my career," Meehan said.

"He's up there. He's a dangerous opponent, he really is, so I've had to prepare as best I could, which I'm sure I have.

"I've done so much hard sparring, and now I'm ready. It's fight time now."

Kali Meehan fights Joseph Parker on Thursday night at The Trusts Arena in Auckland.

Parker probably couldnt fight Mansour outside the US if it was him. Mansour went to prison for 8years for dealing cocaine... Makes travel difficult- Not many countries that turn a blind eye to that.
When Kali fought Travis Walker he was out of shape and not very motivated. Kali destroyed shane cameron last year and he will be in even better shape and more motivated for JP. This really is a career defining fight for JP. On another note I'm also excited for the rematch between Brown Butterbean and Kaleni! Thoughts please?
Good post Bfan. I heard there was something like 20K paid out to Kaliningrad for his win, if that is true it's seems helluva extravagant
Yeah he got paid I think $15000 for knocking out BB then if he does it again on Thursday night he gets $20000. I think Kaleni can do it again but if he does KO the BB again then what happens to BB because the hype around him will most certainly diminish because he was this trash talking phenomenon who was knocking everyone out and generating alot of interest and then he lost to Kaleni but if he gets knocked out again what happens to him? How do they rebuild him? What do they do with him? I actually like the BB he's a real inspiration with his weight loss and all his community work and I hope he wins and I'm sure he will because like I said if he doesn't then the hype around him dies.
Part of the attraction of BB was his over the top hype. Not no more. He got dealt to. He'll be extremely cautious against Kaleni, which is not his style. BB wasn't even in that fight. End of BB.

Travis Walker has lost something like seven in a row now. He used to be a promising heavyweight prospect. I think Kali was having trouble getting the fights he wanted, and felt hard done by the boxing promoters. He certainly looked good until he got tagged. It was about three straight punches in a combination, and that was the end of Kali.

Meehan has a powerful right hand, and a good jab. Let's see if he can take JP's speed. He says his son hit's harder than Parker. We'll see.
BB isn't finished yet if he wins then the show
goes on. So you think JP"s Speed and punch combinations will
Be too much for Kali ?
Yes, too much speed and power. BB wasn't even in the fight with Kaleni. Let's just say he got off to a bad start, and it'll be different in Auckland Thursday. He met a southpaw who could punch, and hurt him. Not someone trying to out brawl him.
