The Leapais and Meehans are a couple of the names he needs to get by to achieve his goal if not so much as a test but for the experience to tighten his defences and build his confidences. These guys sit well beneath the category he's going to have to face before progressing to a shot at the top echelon.
Exactly Sham... Meehan or Leapai would seriously struggle with JP's speed, but again, these are the guys he needs to knock off and knock off convincingly over his next 10 fights.

He will struggle at this stage with both these guys as they are both awkward, experienced and know how to take a shot. But they are beatable and well below the level he'll have to reach if he wants to fight a "real" top 10 guy.

Right now, KB knows JP is vulnerable to an overhand right or big left hook, which both these guys have got in their arsenal. JP needs to show KB head movement and high hands when he's on the attack, and that last fight with Saglam just showed how far JP has to go before he can fight these guys an achieve those defensive skills.

Yes JP looked good going forward but its the defense that's worries KB.

Meehan and Leapai after another 3 or so fights time I reckon Wink

If I recall correctly, the first of Tuas fights I even saw (on regular NZ TV) was his 17th fight, against Cecil Coffee...  Can anyone else recall if the earlier US fights were even televised in NZ?

Hear hear cranky!  That's it!  David's apprenticeship was played out without limelight and bs on under-cards.  Duco are over selling Parker and his opponents when he should be quietly going about his apprenticeship - knocking them over every two months, as Tua did (thanks for that list diehard).  What grates me is the hype and crap they spin to hook in the public.  V.

JP is a completely different fighter than David.... David had natural power and an excellent boxing brain with a tonne of amateur experience, he lived boxing from a very young age.

JP has power, speed and is still learning the basics... KB knows he has a long way to go and is still a rough diamond. Head movement and hands up when throwing punches in still part of the learning process.

He can't fight a top 10 guy with those fundamental flaws at this stage... that's why I wish Duco would shut up promoting him as a title contender in the next year or so... its absolute bollox and they know it!!!

But on a positive note, I do believe JP is good enough to be a contender in 3 or so years, especially under the guidance of KB.

Great post Dannyboy.. JP certainly needs some polishing and I do hope that KB can bring out the diamond but, to date, all I have seen is JP transformed into a stronger and fitter man. The acid test will be when he is matched with much stronger opposition.. till then, we can only hope he is making the required progress.  By the way - Parker will beat Meehan and Luapai - should stop them both in the later rounds - exactly what he needs.  V.
Getting some good work and boxing nous on here now..

Great work gentlemen!!
I'm ok with Meehan and Leapai after three or more fights. But not now. Don't ruin his confidence and momentum to prove a point--that he's not ready for them yet. Yes, he'll probably win, and even KO one of them. But as you say, a right hand by either one of them that KO's Parker all but ends his career. Why take the chance? There are guys in the top ten who are EASIER to beat than those two. Higher Reward, Same Risk. Probably lower risk.

You guys are complaining about the hype, and Joseph not being ready. I agree, but then you want to throw him to the wolves to prove that he's not ready. I say you keep bringing on the Saglam's, Minto's, and Williams until he's ready. He's NOT ready for the elite yet. Never said he was. I just like how he's progressing now. When he's had five fights or more, hopefully learning as he goes along both in fights and in sparring, then let him take the plunge. KB said he's got a lot to learn, in his infancy, why is that hype. Mr Higgins, my mate, hasn't hyped him at all. It's all Lonergan, and anyone who listens to him is a fool.

Veritas says that KB can't take him to the promised land. Dannyboy says he can. What do others think?
I don't know if KB can take him there Die, but i'm a bit worried that JP has been clobbered by the same overhand right by Nascimento (hurt Parker), Costa Jnr, Saglam, and several times by the Tank.

Surely KB would have addressed it, so is it just lack of experience in the ring by JP, or KB's fault?

I think once JP get's the red mist, his technique is all about attack, and he doesn't think about defence (he has a low left hand). Once he steps up, that will be a very dangerous strategy, but will make for some entertaining fights.

Danny and Veritas - agree completely about rough diamond and needing rounds against tough old veterans.
Whats the promised land? getting beaten by Klitsko? KB can do that if they plan it out properly. Leapai got a title shot, it shouldn't be too hard for Joseph.
Promised Land? Guess getting a title shot, or winning a title against someone other than Klit. or waiting until Klit retires. OHR, yep, he's been hit with it, and KB kept telling him in the corner during the fight to bring back his left hand jab. He did when told, but would then slip back again. So, it's not enough to just tell him, he needs to learn how to do it. And I don't think the learning should take place by getting clobbered by veterans like Meehan or Leapai. The three you mentioned above was bad enough.

Is it KB's fault? I don't know, neither he nor anyone else was able to get Tua to learn how to get inside a taller man. Wasn't like he wasn't told often enough.
