Too hard, you'll just have to believe me there was one, with a photo.

Just noticed Bowyn Morgan climbed 300 places in Boxrec's World Rankings to about 340. Not bad for a night's work. Hopefully another step up on the Parker undercard in ChCh

Rapira expecting tough scrap despite opponent's lack of experience

Sam Rapira has had a good break since his unanimous points decision win over Togasilimai Letoa.

Don't be fooled by the rookie record of Sam Rapira's next opponent.

That was the straight message from the New Plymouth professional boxer on Wednesday after he announced his next opponent.

Rapira, 32, will meet Wellington's Craig Turner on the undercard of the New Zealand cruiserweight title rematch between holder Monty Betham and Taranaki's James Langton in Opunake on June 30.

Turner has had just one professional fight but has an extensive background in kickboxing.

Prove of his toughness and ability came from the performance he put up in his first-up bout when he lost a split decision to Adrian Taihia who is due to fight the experienced Robert Berridge for the New Zealand light heavyweight title in Auckland in October.

That performance was also not ignored when it came to his national ranking being issued with Turner afforded the No 5 spot in the light heavyweight division, just two below Rapira.

While Rapira's international ranking got as high as 105 in recent weeks, the busy nature of the division has seen him slip to 115.

However, a win against Turner would more than likely see him break into the top 100, an aim he has had for a considerable time.

Not that he was predicting it to be straight forward.

"I have not fought a kickboxer who has not been as tough as," he said. "They are always tough and he will be the same."

Rapira afforded himself a decent break after his unanimous points decision win over Samoan light heavyweight champion Togasilimai Letoa in New Plymouth in April.

"It was a hard fight and I knew I needed a good rest so I had that and I was ready to get back into it."

Getting back "into it" has meant his usual four-day trips to Auckland where he unites with trainer Lolo Heimuli who has had him sparring with four boxers as close as they can find to mirror Turner.

"I think I will be ready for whatever he [Turner] brings," Rapira added. "We are always working on new sets of skills, no matter what fighter we are facing."

The scheduled six round fight was a good fit for Rapira, he said, with the remainder of this year's programme starting to be penciled in.

With his ranking now hovering close to that 100-mark, Rapira was starting to field interest from more overseas boxers keen to step into the ring with him.

His team had anticipated a possible rematch with Australian Rob Powdrill, who defeated Rapira in a split decision last August for the vacant International Boxing Organisation's Inter-Continental light heavyweight title last August, but he announced his retirement before reconsidering to take up a lucrative fight in China.

It does look on the cards that another card would be organised for New Plymouth within the next months. Just when, exactly, would depend on how Rapira's body felt after the Turner fight.
